Where is C=
heading?
This following article is based on the
WoC assembly in Pasadena, California
earlier this fall. At this exhibition
Commodore introduced the CD³² to the
American public, with a massive
success. It is interesting that C=
concentrates primarily to Europe; the
launch of the CD³² is half year ahead
here of the American start.
James Dionne, president of CBM stated
that the A4000 and A1200 series are a
huge success all over the world. He
also hopes that the CD machine will be
the new C-64. Personally I would
doubt it because I've heard that
although it is cheaper an better than
Sega's CD, but just a minor amount of
people are willing to buy one. I
guess this is due to the lack of
advertisements and commercials from
Commodore. Dionne informed the
journalists that C= is only
concentrating on the Amiga series,
they stop producing PC clones. Well,
I think all of you have all the infos
about this wonderful console, so I
won't detail the advantages.
After the introduction of the CD³²,
came some informations about the
technical developments at C=. Due to
the economical problems at the firm,
they stopped the development of things
like:
@IPcamC
- AA Display Enhancer
- Network software
- DSP card
- A4091 SCSI2 controller
- Multi-port card
- Ethernet network card
These are finished developments, only
needed to be produced, but Commodore
gave the full documentation of these
products to different Amiga based
development firms FOR FREE!
Also at WoC, the first AAA chipset got
tested. It had various problems yet
of course, but it was able to show
24-Bit pictures. Louis Eggebrecht
said that it needs ca.4 months of
further development, so the first
versions will be out at the beginning
of '94. Computers with AAA will be
out in the middle of 1994.
The Amiga OS3.1 is finished. New
features are:
- new CD³² routines
- CD-ROM filesystem
- Postscript driver
- all 3.0 bugs fixed
- and some more advantages
Also this year a double speed CD-ROM
drive will be available for the
A4000's and 1200's. This CD-ROM makes
an 1200 fully compatible with a CD³²!
Some other news from C=:
- A4000T will be out at the end of
fall.
- The MPEG modul will be available for
the CD³² at the end of November.
- Contrary to the rumours, the A1400
will possibly never see the light
of day...
